Shakha Gillin, MD, FAAP, has been in North County since 1990. She attended UCSD for her undergraduate education and medical school. She did residency at UC Irvine and was the chief resident at Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach. She practiced pediatrics in La Jolla for five years and Encinitas for five years. She also worked at a private practice in Newport Beach and at the Rady Children’s Hospital Emergency Department.
Dr. Shakha Gillin has a special interest in preventative care, particularly healthy and active lifestyles for children. She was recognized by San Diego Magazine as a “Top Doctor” annually in their rankings for 2006-2018. She was recognized as “Best Pediatrician” by Ranch and Coast. Sara-Chana Silverstein, a Master Herbalist RH (AHG), spends much of her time teaching women about the use of complementary medicine, a practice which integrates alternative and conventional medicines. She shows her clients how using herbs can help them become emotionally and physically stronger. Sara-Chana is also trained in Classical Homeopathy and is an International Board-Certified Lactation/Breastfeeding Consultant (IBCLC). She has helped over 18,000 babies successfully breastfeed and as a doula, contributed to the delivery of 450 babies.
She is also an author, columnist, keynote speaker, adult education teacher, community advocate for women and children, a wife and mother of seven children. Dr. Melanie Howell grew up in Bergen County New Jersey. She received her medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry-School of Osteopathic Medicine. She then completed a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation from NYU Langone Medical Center/Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine. Upon completion of her residency, she went on to pursue fellowship training in Cancer Rehabilitation Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she focused on the treatment of pain, as well as the restoration of function during and after cancer treatment.
Dr. Howell is board-certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, a member of the New York Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and a member of the American Osteopathic Association. She is also an active member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
In addition to participating in a research project emphasizing the prevalence of pelvic girdle pain, she has published peer-reviewed articles in both musculoskeletal medicine and acupuncture. Dr. Howell also co-authored a pelvic pain chapter in a pain management manual. Dr. Howell joined Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine because she is both passionate and determined to manage the discomfort and dysfunction associated with pelvic pain. During her medical training and as an attending, she saw firsthand how debilitating this pain could be. She remains dedicated to providing this very deserving patient population with options and improved quality of life.
